Whakatane is Moari, in English it means "I wanna become a man" or something like this.
Whakatane is 1 and half hour driving distance from Te Puke, and the named came from a legend that in last time, female wasn't allow to go on ship or work on ship because Moari thinks that ships and the career is belong to man, but one day, the ships was hijacked by pirate and a lot of man dead, then a brava lady called Wairaka stand up and yelled "Whakatane" and she goes on the ship to fight back their belonging. And since that this place has been called Whakatane, and there're a statue of Wairaka in the place.
Well, I guess this is the whole story, i guess XD.
A very beautiful stop to start our journey of 12 hours driving (well, we spread to 2 days la XD), so after Whakatane, we headed to East Cape, where's the east-est part / cape of the world, also know as the first point to see the sunlight everyday, and this is the hot place where the people went and count down for the new year eve.
Oh yea, to go to Gisborne you can choose the easy and fast highway, but we choose the pacific coast highway because of this highway is build beside the coast, very beautiful scenery all the way to Gisborne, if you have enough time, you should just take this highway, its worth.
Its just took us 15 minutes to up to the cape, just don't get frighten when you see the cape is far away, it isn't, the track is easy and not steep at all, but might be slippery when wet.
Up to the peak isn't difficult, the most difficult thing is find the entrance of the track! It hide inside a private property, you have to go into the garden of some people house, and then you will see there're a signboard showing the way to east cape =.=
Frankly wasn't speacial at all of the cape, but this place is meaningful, i been the east-est part of the worth is cool, ain't. Well you should really come here although the cape itself is not special, but the place is!
